South Delhi: Drunk youth who had set 18 vehicles on fire, arrested

The man who had set ablaze 18 vehicles at South Delhi's Madangir village area during the early hours of Tuesday has been arrested on Wednesday. By the time firefighters doused the fire, it had already engulfed other vehicles parked near the car and the two bikes, the police said. As many as 18 vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, parked in a residential colony Madangir village were gutted after the 23-year-old-man, identified as Vijay Shukla, set them on fire. The incident was captured in CCTV cameras installed in the street where the vehicles were parked. A timely alert by locals and swift action by firefighters and police helped control the flames, averting a major tragedy According to the police, the accused, a resident of Uttarakhand, was apprehended on Wednesday during patrolling. "One country-made pistol loaded with one live round and matchboxes were found in his possession, following which a case under section 25 of Arms Act was registered against him," said Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (south). During sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed that in the early hours of Tuesday he had set 4 cars and 14 motorcycles on fire in Madangir area under the influence of liquor. "The accused Shukla is a vagabond and addicted to alcohol. His father died a few years ago while his mother and two unmarried sisters live together somewhere in Delhi but they are not in touch him with them due to his addiction to drugs," said Kumar. Police said that the accused has been arrested under sections 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code.
