NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old woman returning home after dropping her children at school was shot at by two men in Mahipalpur on Monday morning. The men, allegedly hired by her estranged husband , threatened locals who tried to stop them and fled on a bike. The victim, Kavita, is admitted in the ICU. Her family claimed that her husband had been threatening to shoot her for the past two weeks after she had approached the village panchayat with a complaint of torture against him.The police were informed about the incident at 9am. Kavita was waylaid in the lane outside her house. The shooters were hiding behind the gate of a neighbour’s house, Kavita’s father Attar Singh said. They challenged Kavita and then opened fire twice from a country-made pistol. The bullets hit Kavita on her shoulder and chest. The shooters then ran towards a bike, on which another man was already waiting for them.“Hearing the gunshots some of the neighbours tried to stop them, but they brandished the weapon and a knife to threaten them,” a neighbour said. Kavita’s cousins and neighbours rushed her to a private hospital in Vasant Kunj.Kavita’s father said she had married the suspect Ritesh Singh, a resident of Islampur in Gurgaon, in 2010. Ritesh used to be a property dealer then but later took to drugs. They had two children as well. But in the past two years, the couple had a troubled marriage. Kavita accused Ritesh of torturing her after returning home drunk. Last year, she came back home to Mahipalpur and admitted her children to a private school.“She was being threatened by Ritesh ever since. He used to send her photographs of pistols and guns on her Facebook and threaten to shoot her if he found her alone on road,” said Singh. A few days ago, Ritesh threatened her on phone after which the family approached the Jat panchayat at their village, which recommended the filing of a police case and also warned Ritesh’s family.Ritesh apparently grew violent after that and threatened to do something drastic, Kavita’s family alleged. The Vasant Kunj police are conducting a hunt for Ritesh and the two shooters.
