NEW DELHI: This brother-sister duo would stop vehicles on the highway , ask for a lift and strangle the driver before vanishing with his belongings. Police finally caught up with Shiv Kumar and Neelam in Rohini on Tuesday. Among other grisly deeds, they were found to have murdered a DTC driver, whose body was found by the roadside in Sonipat. An investigation revealed that a few days before the bus driver’s killing, the two had attacked an autorickshaw driver in a similar way. After the murders, they drove the targeted vehicle to their village in Baktawarpur near Alipur in outer Delhi and dumped it there.Police first suspected them for the murders when they found the vehicles belonging to the victims lying abandoned in Bakhtawarpur village. “A team led by Ajay Kumar, inspector (special staff), began questioning the local residents,” said Gaurav Sharma, DCP (Outer-north). “The interrogation of more than 100 people yielded the information that the brother and sister returned home at odd hours despite being jobless.”The two were nabbed on Tuesday and questioned by the cops. “They admitted to the murders and robbery,” said DCP Sharma. During interrogation, Shiv Kumar revealed that he had once been an electrician. Without work, he had run up big debts because he didn’t earn much nor was he physically strong. Desperate, he thought up the idea of using his sister to lure people on the highway and rob them. Accordingly, in their confession they said Neelam distracted the driver while the brother strangled him.The two had first struck on February 12, when they hired an autorickshaw to go to Dwarka, offering the driver, identified as Sanjay Kumar, more than the normal fare to drive them to and fro. On the way back, they asked Sanjay to drive to Bakhtawarpur. Shiv strangled him with his sister’s chunni. They then dumped the body at a field, deserted the autorickshaw there and fled with the driver’s money and other belongings. The body was discovered the next day.The second victim was DTC driver Pritam Chauhan, who offered to drop them to Swaroop Nagar after they thumbed him down near Madhuban Chowk. Shiv garrotted Chauhan with an electric wire and the duo then drove to Sonipat to get rid of the body. Hampered by a flat tyre, the murderous pair just managed to cross the border and throw the body into a pit. They took the car and parked it close to their house in Baktawarpur. That was a fatal error because the villagers told police they had spotted the two stepping out of the car early in the morning. Police said that it was possible they were involved in other incidents too, and investigations are on.
