NEW DELHI: On Tuesday afternoon, police received a call from a Kirti Nagar businessman who claimed that he had been robbed of Rs 34 lakh by two robbers on a bike. When police teams arrived at the scene, they found the complainant, Vinay Mendiratta (46), cleaning chilli powder off his eyes. Eventually, when the police began a firm line of questioning, Mendiratta confessed to having cooked up the robbery story. He said his friend had given him the money to keep it safe as he was going out of town for a few days. But greed overcame Mendiratta and he decided to keep the money by claiming that he had been robbed. The cash bag with all the money was found at Mendiratta’s home, and he was booked under IPS sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 182 (giving false information to a public servant).
