NEW DELHI: Grandmotherly instinct and a bit of good fortune seem to have spared two-year-old Vihaan Singhal the same tragic fate as his parents and grandmother. He was lying in the lap of his grandmother Rita Singhal when a truck carrying sand toppled on the Audi A6 being driven by father on Tuesday night. While his grandmother bending over him cushioned the impact of the smashed roof, he was also pushed into the space between the front and rear seats, helping him avoid the deadly crush of metal. After Vihaan was pulled out from the mangled Audi by a policeman, the main worry was not about his immediate survival, but his future. A neighbour who took Vihaan to the hospital said that the boy kept calling out for his mother. His grandfather, Subhash Singhal, and aunt Ekta, sister of his father Sumit, are the only members of his immediate family left to look after him.Every time relatives looked at the Facebook profile of the boy’s mother, Ruchi, on Wednesday, they were overwhelmed with grief. The photo, taken a month ago, shows Ruchi with her baby son.According to neighbours, Sumit married Ruchi three years ago, and Vihaan was born a year later. Anil Kumar, who lives next door to the Singhals in A8 Block of Rohini Sector 15, disclosed, “The family considered Vihaan to be lucky since their business had prospered after his birth.” Subhas had apparently handed over the operations of the family’s pulses processing business to Sumit. The latter had bought the Audi after Vihaan’s birth.Kumar said, “The child is agitated that his parents aren’t around. It will be difficult for them to explain their disappearance to him.” Daya Agarwal, Sumit’s aunt, said, “We’ve lost everything. Allow us to cope with that first. After the completion of rites, we will confer on Vihaan’s future.”Having married Sumit off, the elder Singhals were planning Ekta’s matrimony this year. “They were to have met a prospective groom this Sunday,” revealed Anu, a neighbour and family friend. “They had even repainted the house in preparation for the event.”
