NEW DELHI: Three of a family, returning home from a wedding, were crushed to death in their Audi A6 when a speeding dumper truck overloaded with sand toppled over and fell on the vehicle, burying it under a pile of sand in Rohini, northwest Delhi, on Tuesday night. Businessman Sumit Singhal, 29, who was driving, his wife Ruchi and mother Rita were killed on the spot. The couple's two-year-old son, Vihaan, sleeping on his grandmother's lap on the rear seat, escaped with injuries.A crane was called to lift the truck and pull out the car. Firemen then used a gas-cutter to extricate the victims from the wreckage. Eyewitnesses said Singhal was taking a U-turn to get to his house in Sector 15. The driver of the speeding truck was late in spotting the Audi come onto the carriageway just ahead of him. He slammed the brakes, which made the overloaded truck skid, turn and topple over. "It all happened within seconds. The truck flipped and fell on the car. The Audi had no chance of getting out of the way. Its occupants were buried under the truck and a huge mound of sand for an hour before being pulled out," said Kuldeep Singh, who sells snacks outside an ESI Hospital next to the crash site.The truck driver, Harpal Singh, was caught on Wednesday. Police say the truck was overloaded, due to which it skid.
