How the shootout near Akshardham unfolded

NEW DELHI: Bullets flew near Akshardham temple late Thursday afternoon, throwing the popular tourist spot into chaos, as cops clashed with a gang of robbers who had just looted two businessmen of Rs 22 lakh at gunpoint.The criminals tried to escape by firing at least twice at the cops, who nevertheless managed to nab one of the four men. The cops, from Pandav Nagar police station and the reserve battalion, signalled them to stop but they panicked and fired at the cops.The bullets missed the cops, who managed to pin down one of the robbers along with his weapon and chased the others. Later, the businessmen’s collection agent, who had tipped off the robbers, was also arrested.The shooting sent police in a tizzy and additional personnel were called in to sanitise the area. Nearby units were also alerted about the presence of the robbers, who were found to be involved in a spate of armed robberies in Noida.Aasu told the cops that they had received information about the cash from the businessmen’s cash collection agent. Cops suspect the same gang carried out the sensational gunpoint robbery outside Crowne Plaza in Mayur Vihar on Monday.The victims, Ashok and Narender, are residents of Karnal who had come to Ghazipur mandi to collect payments.

They were going to Ajmeri Gate in an auto, when the robbers, on two bikes, stopped them at gunpoint around 4.30pm, police said.DCP (east) Jasmeet Singh said two arrests had been made and a case under various sections of the IPC and arms act has been registered for further investigation.The complainants told cops that there were approximately Rs 22 lakh in the cash bag and the robbers fled with it by taking a turn on the wrong side of the carriageway on national highway-24.However, the robbers encountered four patrolling cops on the road, who had spotted them coming in the wrong direction. The cops, from Pandav Nagar police station and the reserve battalion, signalled them to stop but they panicked and fired at the cops.The bullets missed the cops, who managed to pin down one of the robbers along with his weapon and chased the others. The rest of the gang, however, managed to escape taking advantage of the scuffle.The arrested criminal, identified as Aasu, a resident of Bhajanpura in northeast Delhi, was quickly questioned as wireless sets crackled about the firing incident. Nearby units were also alerted about the presence of the robbers, who were found to be involved in a spate of armed robberies in Noida.Aasu told the cops that they had received information about the cash from the businessmen’s cash collection agent. A separate team managed to track the agent and nab him.Speaking on the robbery, Delhi police spokesperson, DCP Madhur Verma, said controlling street crime was one of the main priorities of the force. “We are constantly working to curb street crime in the capital and there has been a constant reduction in the number of incidents over the past one-and-halfyears,” DCP Verma said.Investigating teams are now scanning CCTV footage of the whole stretch to ascertain the sequence of events. A forensic team later visited the scene of crime and has collected evidences from there.Late at night, teams had been sent to bust various hideouts of the remaining suspects.
