In September, the department had said only 18% of the taxis in Delhi have functional GPS devices. Delhi government had made functional GPS mandatory in autos and taxis in 2009. Currently, all public vehicles, including buses and gramin sewas, must have GPS devices. In January 2018, the department had set up a control centre, from where all public service vehicles can be tracked through GPS. However, the department’s data reveals that only 29% of these vehicles, including school buses and vans, have GPS devices that can be tracked. Though the autos plying in Delhi are CNG-run, most of the 84,000 autos in the rest of NCR run on diesel.EPCA discussed conversion of all three-wheelers in the capital to BS-VI before the 2020 deadline.

NEW DELHI: Out of the 95,000 registered autorickshaws in the city, only 41,766 have functional GPS systems, the Delhi transport department stated at a meeting of the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) on Thursday.“Nearly 1,00,000 autos ply in the city, out of which 95,000 are registered,” an official said. This is being done in accordance with an apex court order in 2018, when a bench told Delhi government it was better to leapfrog from CNG to hydrogen fuel rather than buying electric buses.Twenty years after SC directed conversion of all buses, taxis and three-wheelers in Delhi into CNG, the bench said last year, “These (hydrogen-fuel) buses are running successfully in other countries and it is used in California. Tata is also manufacturing it. These vehicles have a range of 400km. These are... good for environment.”
