NEW DELHI: Delhi government on Friday launched its ‘Connect Delhi’ initiative, which promises a reliable public transport facility within 500 metres at every neighbourhood and village in Delhi. The Phase-I of the pilot project will soon be implemented in Najafgarh, where residents will be able to avail transport at 15 minutes intervals. The scheme will help rationalise bus and feeder services through optimum use of resources, state transport minister Kailash Gahlot said on Friday. The initiative is a part of a route rationalisation study being carried out by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS). “There will be scientific analysis of not only bus routes, but also RTVs, Grameen Sewa, feeder buses. Previous governments had started these studies at different times, but were either not completed or implemented,” he said, adding that the study by DIMTS will be completed soon.As part of the project, 17 bus routes have been identified in Najafgarh, of which three are trunk routes — 817 (Kair Village-Inderlok), 817N (Najafgarh-Mori Gate) and 764 (Najafgarh-Nehru Place) — where buses will be available every 5-10 minutes. To maintain the frequency, 70 additional buses have been deployed on these routes, Gahlot said.Apart from the three trunk routes, there are eight primary ones where buses will be available every 10-20 minutes, and six feeder routes where they will run every 20-45 minutes.Authorities even plan different colour scheme for separate routes for easy identification. For instance, trunk route buses may have a different colour from the primary ones, and the bus shelters might also be painted in specific bus scheme.Gahlot said the project at Najafgarh would be replicated in other parts of the city, which require more buses, but the demand could only be met by the ongoing procurement process.“The roll out of 1,000 standard-floor buses is expected to start within two months,” he said, adding that that there is a requirement of 2,500 smaller buses which can travel through narrow roads and lanes. The government is planning to procure these either through Delhi Transport Corporation DTC ) or cluster scheme. The public transport system in Delhi comprises Delhi Metro , buses, RTV, autorickshaw , e-rickshaw, Gramin Sewa, eco-cabs and various other feeder services.
