Thieves take away ATM with Rs 31L in Delhi

NEW DELHI: In a major heist, thieves uprooted an ATM in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar and made away with approximately Rs 31 lakh early on Tuesday.The kiosk belonged to Corporation Bank and reportedly did not have full-time security guards. The customers and locals alerted bank officials and the police.Police said that the bank is located adjacent to the kiosk and operates from 9am to 9pm. It was found that apart from approximately Rs 15 lakh inside the machine, Rs 16.5 lakh had been deposited on Monday afternoon.Police said bank officials are being questioned about the exact amount in the machine and the security measures taken to safeguard it. Even inside the kiosk, the men tried to avoid revealing their faces.The men unscrewed the bolts holding the machine and then packed it into a pick-up truck to carry it away. The bank manager and other officials got to know about this in the morning.

Confirming the developments, DCP (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said that a case has been registered and multiple teams have been constituted for further investigation.The incident was reported on Tuesday morning when some customers entered the kiosk and found the machine missing. The customers and locals alerted bank officials and the police.Police said that the bank is located adjacent to the kiosk and operates from 9am to 9pm. Bank officials told police that the kiosk’s shutter was closed down at 9pm every night, following which the guard deployed there also left.Incidentally, the man supposed to close down the shutter forgot to do it on Monday night before leaving. The bank manager and other officials got to know about this in the morning. On inspection of the kiosk, it was found that that the machine was uprooted without using any gas cutters that are commonly used by criminals.It was found that the men entered around 3am and first cut off the wire of the CCTV cameras located outside the bank and sprayed black paint on the lens to avoid being identified. Even inside the kiosk, the men tried to avoid revealing their faces.The men unscrewed the bolts holding the machine and then packed it into a pick-up truck to carry it away. It was found that apart from approximately Rs 15 lakh inside the machine, Rs 16.5 lakh had been deposited on Monday afternoon.Police said bank officials are being questioned about the exact amount in the machine and the security measures taken to safeguard it. CCTV footage from nearby metro stations and shops is also being scanned.It is suspected that the men drove towards Haryana after taking the machine and the toll plazas and border points are being checked for suspicious movements.
