New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday suspended its Kerala convener CR Nelakandan for announcing “unconditional and unilateral” support to the Congress party candidates in the state without consulting the central leadership. “On April 18, the Kerala AAP convener with no authority and without the approval of the Political Affairs Committee held a press conference and announced unconditional support to the candidates of the Congress party. He did this in his personal capacity and the party has nothing to do with the same,” said Somnath Bharti, AAP’s Kerala in-charge. For Kerala, our plan is to extend our support to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidates.”He further informed that party secretary PT Tufail will work as acting convener of the Kerala unit until a suitable candidate is appointed by the party. Lok Sabha polls in the country are scheduled to be held in seven phases starting from April 11 and ending on May 19.

Finding the reply to the show-cause notice issued to Neelakandan unsatisfactory, the party found the act as the gross violation of discipline and suspended him with immediate effect, said Bharti. Highlighting the central objective of defeating the BJP, Bharti said, “The party has strategised differently in different states but everywhere the motive remains the same. For Kerala, our plan is to extend our support to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidates.” He further informed that party secretary PT Tufail will work as acting convener of the Kerala unit until a suitable candidate is appointed by the party.
