Planning panel ex-adviser hails free rides to women

Tribune News ServiceNew Delhi, June 17Supporting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s much-talked-about proposal to offer free ride to women on public transport, former Principal Adviser to Planning Commission of India Renuka Viswanathan today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She said, “The AAP government recently made a revolutionary proposal that women commuters should not pay for public transport. They have held extensive consultations with experts, the citizens of Delhi and women beneficiaries. There is an overwhelming support to the move, but a few critical voices have also been heard.”She wrote, “Recently, we learnt that E Sreedharan, former managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), has opposed the proposal saying that revenues should be maximised, so that fares could be kept at low and affordable for ordinary citizens while the Metro makes operational surplus to pay back its loans. Sreedharan seems to have overlooked some salient features of the Delhi government’s proposal.”She added, “I trust that the Central government will recognise and appreciate the many merits of the proposal and support it in all respect.”
