Gurugram: In a tragic incident, Pawan Chabbara aged 46, who was working as a senior technician in a renowned domestic airlines was killed after being hit by a speeding vehicle at Gurugram – Delhi expressway. Moreover, his friend Puneet Satija who is employed in Airbus company as an engineer was also hit by the unknown vehicle and is battling for his life in a private hospital in Gurugram. The incident occurred in the wee hour of Sunday when the two had gone to attend a party in Delhi. Upon their return to Gurugram, they asked their friends to leave them near Ambience mall. After having some snacks from a five-star hotel, they ordered a cab and were waiting for it when a speeding vehicle hit them from behind. They were admitted in the hospital for treatment where Pawan succumbed to his injuries. Pawan used to live in Essel towers an upscale condominium society in MG road while his friend Punnet was living in Sector-50. Even though a case has been registered in Phase-3 police station, the law enforcement officials as of now have not been able to make any headway in the case and have not made any arrests. The police meanwhile have begun to retrieve the CCTV images and are now trying to get the leads on which vehicle was involved in the accident. The case has occurred days after another horrific tragedy where a six-year was also killed after being hit by multiple vehicles in Golf Course road. The painful death caused to the minor could be gauged from the fact that the boy was first hit by a speeding motorcycle and then by a car. In 2018, there were over 180 people lost their lives because of the reckless driving of the drivers. In total over 442 lives were lost due to road mishaps. It is estimated that two out of three accidents at Delhi-Jaipur highway is caused by heavy vehicles. Various studies that have been conducted on the drivers have revealed that more than 50 per cent of the drivers of the trucks has poor eyesight. Officials also indicate that the visibility further decreased during driving heavy vehicles. Other factors resulting in the deadly mishap are fatigue, overspeeding, drunken driving and overloading. Despite a large number of traffic constables deployed on the roads to manage the situation various commuters often complain police officials are not present in those locations where traffic violations are rampant. On average, there are eight deaths and thirty accidents occurring daily in Gurugram. For a city that is witnessing about 48,000 vehicle registrations in a year, deadly accidents continue to be a major challenge in the city. "The planning by public and private authorities does need a complete overhaul and needs to encompass all forms of commuters." "Unfortunately, because of vested interests, it will never be followed. The civil society must continue to raise its voice with regards to the development of facilities for cyclists and pedestrians," said Sarita Bhargava, a city resident.
