The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the government`s demand to reopen and re-verify National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. The court also said that said that the security aspects of the data involving NRC will get the same kind as of Aadhaar.

The NRC Assam said the status of people born in India between 1971 and 1987 will be decided depending on the final decision by the Supreme Court Constitution bench on the Citizenship Act provisions.

"Only hard copies of lists of inclusions and exclusions to be provided at district offices. The NRC to be updated according to law laid down in section 66a Judgment," the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said.

Earlier in July, the Supreme Court has extended its July 31 deadline to August 31 for publication of the final Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC).

This came after the NRC coordinator sought more time to ensure that draft lists and the list of new names (added after considering exclusion/inclusion) are published.

What is NRC?

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens. It was first prepared in 1951.The 1951 NRC list has been updated for Assam, which has had a longstanding foreigner problem, to remove out illegal migrants and save further inflow.
