46-year-old man held for cheating women

The accused, identified as Gaurav Dhamija (46), a class X dropout, mostly targeted widowed or divorced women. The fraudster trapped her through a volley of emotional tricks, which included calling her ‘Mrs Dhamija’ and promising her to buy expensive gifts. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he had started a business of supply of spare parts but incurred huge losses. Post the business failure, he started his hunt on social media and used to target middle-aged, unmarried, widowed, divorced women on matrimonial sites and dating sites.

New Delhi, August 17 The Delhi Police Cyber Cell has arrested a spare parts dealer from Meerut, UP, for cheating on women through matrimonial and dating Sites. The accused, identified as Gaurav Dhamija (46), a class X dropout, mostly targeted widowed or divorced women. He had cheated over 20 women so far and is a resident of Nihal Vihar, Delhi. DCP Anyesh Roy said a complaint was received alleging that the complainant had been cheated by a fraudster who allured her to deposit money after she showed interest in his impressive profile on a matrimonial site. The fraudster trapped her through a volley of emotional tricks, which included calling her ‘Mrs Dhamija’ and promising her to buy expensive gifts. Once the victim was emotionally trapped, he started asking for money on various pretexts such as parents’ treatment, business investment, etc. The DCP said the accused always avoided to meet the girl in person. It was only when the his act became too audacious that the girl started demanding her money back only to be threatened with dire consequences. During the course of investigation the accused kept changing his location to evade arrest. His movements were tracked to Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Western UP. Finally, with the help of technical data and field inputs, the fraudster was arrested from Meerut, he said. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he had started a business of supply of spare parts but incurred huge losses. Post the business failure, he started his hunt on social media and used to target middle-aged, unmarried, widowed, divorced women on matrimonial sites and dating sites. Other victims were being identified and contacted to join the investigation.
