NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a 40-year-old proclaimed offender from Jamia Nagar, who has been absconding for the last 12 years. The accused, identified as Mohammad Yusuf, was wanted in two cases of attempt to murder and was evading arrest since 2005. According to G Ram Gopal Naik, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Branch, specific inputs were received on August 20 that Yusuf, who has been declared a proclaimed offender by a local court, would be coming to Jamia Nagar. "Acting on the inputs, a trap was laid and he was apprehended. Earlier, several efforts were made to nab the absconder, but his whereabouts could not be traced as he was residing in Kashmir along with his family members," said Naik. During interrogation, Yusuf told the police that on November 21, 2005, he along with his associates were planning a dacoity when a police party tried to apprehend them. They had attacked the police team and managed to escape. "Subsequently, a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act was registered at Shahdara police station and an investigation was taken up, said Naik. Yusuf had recently shifted to Jamia Nagar and was continuously changing his mobile number every one or two months. "The concerned local police have been informed about his arrest for further necessary legal action," said Naik.
