Gurugram: After seeing an upward trend of having a healthy sex ratio figures of 900 females to 1000 males, Gurugram has seen a dip in the first six months of 2019. According to the latest figures, there are 857 females to 1000 males. Prenatal sex screening and female foeticide are banned and punishable under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC-PNDT Act). The poor state of affairs can be gauged from the fact that in 2014, there were 843 females to 1,000 males. While in 2012 there were 841 females to 1,000 males.

Gurugram: After seeing an upward trend of having a healthy sex ratio figures of 900 females to 1000 males, Gurugram has seen a dip in the first six months of 2019. According to the latest figures, there are 857 females to 1000 males. The dip in the figures has prompted public authorities to take action and prevent further dip. So far this year, the sex ratio has been around the 850-mark, which is lower than last years during the same period," confirmed senior officials of the health department, adding that activities of the committee that monitors unregistered ultrasound clinics have taken a back seat. Prenatal sex screening and female foeticide are banned and punishable under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC-PNDT Act). A district committee conducts raids at clinics not registered with the health department under the Act. The committee, according to officials, hasnt conducted a single raid this year. Last year, at least five raids were conducted and cases were filed against offenders, according to the reports. In a recent raid, however, at medical stores, a large number of unregistered anti-pregnancy kits were seized by the public officials. "We havent got any reliable tip-offs on any such illegal activity happening in the district so far which is the reason behind us not conducting raids. When we get any information, we will act on it," said Amandeep Chauhan, district drug control officer. It is important to note that despite stringent measures that have been implemented by public authorities patients still frequent the illegal clinics to abort the girl child. For a district that has registered dismal figures in the previous years, this can also be considered as a major boost to the effort of public agencies to improve the situation. Even though Gurugram is the richest district in Haryana, it is a laggard in not having enough population of women as compared to men despite showing considerable improvement in the sex ratio. The poor state of affairs can be gauged from the fact that in 2014, there were 843 females to 1,000 males. While in 2012 there were 841 females to 1,000 males. From 2014, the district has shown considerable improvement with 875 females to 1,000 males in 2015, 883:1,000 in 2016, 915:1,000 in 2017, and 903:1,000 in 2018. The officials will also work with Women and Child welfare ministry of Haryana government have roped in the services of more than a thousand Anganwadi workers in Gurugram to register pregnant women in the district.
