Stone pelting in Govindpuri Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar held

Protesters gathered at Ravi Das marg in Govindpuri and resorted to stone-pelting. Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad has been detained from Tughlakabad. It is also said that the one bike was set on fire by the violent mob of protesters. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had demolished the Ravidas temple on August 10 on the orders of the Supreme Court. Sources said that after returning from the Ramila maidan, the protesters started moving towards Tughlaqabad, the site where the Ravidas Mandir was demolished.

New Delhi: Soon after the Dalit show of strength at a rally from Jhandewalan to Ramlila maidan, reports of violence and stone-pelting emerged from Southeast Delhis Govindpuri on Wednesday evening. Protesters gathered at Ravi Das marg in Govindpuri and resorted to stone-pelting. Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad has been detained from Tughlakabad. He was taken to Kalkaji police station where Police are lodging FIRs against him for rioting and unlawful assembly. It is also said that the one bike was set on fire by the violent mob of protesters. The police which is already having a massive presence in the area soon swung into action and tried to curtail the violence. The Paramilitary forces were also deployed in the area in view of the volatile situation. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had demolished the Ravidas temple on August 10 on the orders of the Supreme Court. Thousands of Dalit protestors from various parts of the country gathered at the stretch between Jhandewalan and Ramlila Maidan in central Delhi on Wednesday morning to protest the demolition of a Ravidas Mandir in the national capital. However, the situation turned ugly by evening. Sources said that after returning from the Ramila maidan, the protesters started moving towards Tughlaqabad, the site where the Ravidas Mandir was demolished. However, their movement was stopped at Ravidas marg after which the mob turned violent and resorted to stone-pelting. The police force from adjoining police stations like Kalkaji, Okhla and Govindpuri was deployed and senior police officers too rushed to the spot. Armed with lathis and wearing blue turbans and caps the men were seen blocking traffic at various junctures. According to sources around 250 to 300 men when came to Govindpuri at around 6 pm and tried to move to the site of the demolished Ravidas Mandir attacked police forces with lathis and stones as the cops tried to restrict their movement further towards the actual site of demolition.
