Chandrashekhar 96 others sent to fourteen day judicial custody

New Delhi: All 96 arrested in the case, including Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad, have been sent to 14 days judicial custody by Delhi court. "An FIR has been registered on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty among others. Chandrashekhar has been arrested. According to police, Chandrashekhar was the man leading the protests near Tara Apartment, Tughlaqabad extension. Soon, the mob started vandalising vehicles and resorted to stone-pelting which caused several injuries," said a senior police officer.

New Delhi: All 96 arrested in the case, including Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad, have been sent to 14 days judicial custody by Delhi court. Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and 96 others were arrested on Wednesday evening on charges of rioting and unlawful assembly at Govindpuri after the unruly mob damaged property worth lakhs and set several private and government vehicles on fire. The Dalit leader and around 96 others were detained on Wednesday night from Tughlaqabad area after protest by Dalits against the demolition of a Ravidas temple turned violent, prompting police to resort to "mild lathicharge" and use tear gas to disperse the crowd. "An FIR has been registered on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty among others. Chandrashekhar has been arrested. Ninety-six other protesters are also in judicial custody. The probe is on, However, on several other occasions Delhi police has arrested or detained several protesters in similar cases of unlawful assembly and rioting," a Delhi police officer said. According to police, Chandrashekhar was the man leading the protests near Tara Apartment, Tughlaqabad extension. "At about 7:15 pm, around of 2,500 people, some of whom carried lathis, sticks, and rods reached at the Tara Apartment red light. They started raising slogans and were demanding to let them go to the demolished site. Police teams used loudspeakers to warn the mob against it. Soon, the mob started vandalising vehicles and resorted to stone-pelting which caused several injuries," said a senior police officer. According to the police, the protesters set fire to two motorcycles and vandalised cars and a police vehicle. A few policemen were injured in the incident including SHO Jaitpur Anand Prakash, Head constable Narender from Nizamuddin police station, SI Jitender from Kalkaji police station. Police used 29 tear gas shells to disperse the violent mob of protesters. Several locals of Govindpuri too bore the brunt of the violence as the protesters damaged some private vehicles standing on the roadside. Police had to divert traffic from Ravidas Marg to other routes to save other commuters from the violence. The protesters have been demanding that the government hand over the plot of land in Tughlaqabad to the community and rebuild the temple which was demolished by DDA after Supreme court order.
