FIRs registered against private firm in sewer death incident

Ghaziabad: Following the tragic sewer death incident where five labourers were suffocated to death while working at a sewer line in Sihani gate area of Ghaziabad, police have registered two separate FIRs against the private firm engaged for the construction work at sewer line. Cops said that the FIR have been registered over the complaint lodged by Jal Nigam and a co-worker of the deceased. According to police, both the FIR are registered under the section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC. The fatal incident highlighted a sheer negligence on the part of Jal Nigam and the private firm. Meanwhile, the family of two deceased persons Vijay Kumar and Shiv Kumar reached Ghaziabad on Friday and got cheque of Rs 10 lakhs from the Jal Nigam.

Cops said that the FIR have been registered over the complaint lodged by Jal Nigam and a co-worker of the deceased. According to police, both the FIR are registered under the section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC. As per reports, the first FIR has been lodged by a co-worker named Jitendra accusing Ramveer, the owner of EMS Infracon Private Limited, office of which is located in Rajnagar District Centre in Ghaziabad. Another FIR has been lodged by Ajmat Ali, junior engineer of Jal Nigam against Monu Singh, site in-charge of EMS Infracon and Praveen Kumar, site In-charge of Techno Craft Construction, a Noida based private construction company. In both the FIR, the complainants have alleged that the company had not provided any safety gears to the workers while no officer from Jal Nigam or private companies were present to monitor the work. However, police have arrested one of the accused identified as Monu Singh, site incharge of EMS Enfracon who was supposed to supervise the work at the site where the incident had occurred. On Friday, an inspection of the site was also done by Manju Diler, a member of National commission for Safai Karamcharis who recommended to register FIR against five officials of Jal board including chief engineer and executive engineer. "I have personally inspected the site and have spoken to local persons. The fatal incident highlighted a sheer negligence on the part of Jal Nigam and the private firm. Suspension of concerned officials of Jal Nigam is not enough, we recommend that FIR must be registered against them not only under sections of IPC but also under the sections of Manual scavengers and their rehabilitation act and SC/ST act. We demand strict actions to be initiated so that such incidents should not get repeated again," said Diler. Meanwhile, the family of two deceased persons Vijay Kumar and Shiv Kumar reached Ghaziabad on Friday and got cheque of Rs 10 lakhs from the Jal Nigam. The Ghaziabad administration also made arrangements to send the bodies in an air conditioned vehicle to their native place in Bihar. The family of other three deceased were expected to arrive by late Friday night. Speaking with the media, Jawahar Rai, father of deceased Vijay said that he was the sole breadwinner for their family. Vijay is survived by his wife and four young children, an 11-year-old daughter and three sons, aged 18 years, 15 years and 9 years, said Rai.
