Onion prices hit Rs 50 kg mark in retail market

He says that he bought these just before the prices of onions soared. Onions in the retail market in Delhi is being sold at Rs 50 kg. Now with the prices of onions skyrocketing, it becomes hard for us to manage our daily budget. Onion prices have scaled up due to a reduction in the arrival of onions in the wholesale mandis , following floods in major onion supplying states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. It is belived that the arrival of onions from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka is lower this year due to floods.

New Delhi: Sattar, a local tea seller in Delhis Jamia Nagar has four polybags of onions weighing around 2 kg each piled up in his shop. He says that he bought these just before the prices of onions soared. Onions in the retail market in Delhi is being sold at Rs 50 kg. Consumers are left with no choice but to either use fewer onions into day to day food or do away with the essential ingredient straightaway. "It is impractical to do away with onions. Its a must in almost every Indian food. Now with the prices of onions skyrocketing, it becomes hard for us to manage our daily budget. Reasons whatever may, but the prices should be brought down," said Anees Fatima, a housewife in Delhi. Onion prices have scaled up due to a reduction in the arrival of onions in the wholesale mandis , following floods in major onion supplying states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. "I used to buy atleast 5 kg of oinions but this price is almost double of what we paid some days back. It becomes difficult for you to buy it at almost double the price when you know that it was sold at 20 to 25 rs/kg a few days back," said Kamal, a consumer. It is belived that the arrival of onions from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka is lower this year due to floods. Also the plantation of some varities of onions was also affected by late arival of monsoon.
