Gurugram: In a audacious incident, five armed men on Saturday evening allegedly shot at and robbed a 28-year-old truck driver of Rs 1,600 on the Delhi-Jaipur highway in Bilaspur. The victim, identified as Shailender Kumar, a native of Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh, was on his way to pick up industrial materials from Behror in Rajasthan when the incident took place. As per the police report, the incident took place when the man had parked the truck near a hotel on the highway and had gotten down to drink tea. Jai Prakash, station house officer, Bilaspur police station, stated, "The victim, in his statement, said he was about to board the truck when five armed men in a Swift Dzire approached him and asked him to hand over his belongings." Fearing an assault, the driver tried to flee the spot, following which one of them shot him in the waist. Following which he was surrounded and robbed of his belongings. The suspects, as police reported, then got into their car and fled towards Jaipur. The victim was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. A case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and the Arms Act at the Bilaspur police station. Even given the increases in patrols in the area, snatching continues to pose problems for law enforcement officials. Furthermore, many of the cases, close to sixty percent remain unsolved for significant periods of time. In 2018 itself there were 554 cases of snatching that were officially registered in Gurugram. This itself marks an upward trend from 509 cases that were registered in 2017. There seems to be a lack of fear of the law among snatchers in the peripheral areas of Gurugram. This is despite the fact that Haryana has a strict law in place against this crime to the extent of making it a non-bailable offence. Shockingly, many of these incidents take place not only in the desolate places but also in crowded ones and that too during the rush hour. One of the biggest incidents of this kind was reported in 2018 when a manager working in a gas agency was robbed of 37 lakh in broad daylight. In this case, however, all the culprits were subsequently apprehended.
