Gurugram: After a months delay, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has shared a draft version of its Mobility Management Plan (MMP) for public feedback on its official website. It comprises a 352-page document prepared by the Delhis School of Planning and Architecture, provides a detailed look into the existing status quo and future of mobility in Gurugram. The study found very limited facilities available for pedestrians despite the fact that nearly 48 per cent of all daily trips are undertaken on foot. Public transport, meanwhile, accounts for only seven per cent which comprises of buses and shared autos. This handle eight and one per cent of transport volume, respectively. The survey used a sample size of 6,700 homes about two percent of all households in the Gurugram-Manesar Urban Complex area), in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Urban Development. In terms of per household vehicle ownership, the MMP found that "about 65 percent of households have two-wheelers followed by 23 percent household that own cars." The household survey also found that 48 percent of households have an income of Rs 20,000 or more per month while 45 percent lies in the income range of Rs10,000- 20,000 per month." However, it found that traveling within the city is also an expensive task with 40 percent households spending more than Rs 2,000 per month" on transportation, which includes commute to and from offices, schools, and markets, among others. The CMP is seen to one of the most comprehensive projects to be undertaken as the vital data shared under this survey is also to be used for designing the Gurugram-Manesar masterplan of 2031. So far, efforts to improve mobility in Gurugram have focused mainly on conditions of vehicular traffic and the CMP is expected to rectify this approach. According to an official at present in Gurugram, only 25 percent of the primary road network in Gurugram has usable pavements, which adversely affects the common man who does not rely on cars.
