Gurugram: Sunday's fire tragedy in Manesar was another reminder for Gurugram authorities to enhance its infrastructure of fire safety which in the present state of affairs remain unprepared to deal with a major fire tragedy. As has been reported previously, most of the industrial units are openly flouting the Haryana building code of 2017 that has emphasised on providing open spaces and ventilation. Taking note of ignoring the safety of the citizens, the fire department officials have even warned the builders of action if the builders ignore the safety norms. Just this year, there have been six major fire tragedies in the industrial units where lives of not only Indian nationals but also foreign nationals have been lost. The dangers at which most of the industrial units function in Gurugram was experienced when a plastic factory in Manesar caught fire (pic).

Gurugram: Sundays fire tragedy in Manesar was another reminder for Gurugram authorities to enhance its infrastructure of fire safety which in the present state of affairs remain unprepared to deal with a major fire tragedy. As has been reported previously, most of the industrial units are openly flouting the Haryana building code of 2017 that has emphasised on providing open spaces and ventilation. Most of the industries that have set their bases in the industrial areas that are minimum 30 years old and in areas like Khandsa, Rajendra Park, Udyog Vihar high density of industrial units have led to less space utilisation. An industrial survey will begin in Gurugram from December 15 where a list of all industries operating legally will be collated by the officials. A major worry remains that all the four fire service stations do not possess types of equipment like hydraulic platforms and turntable ladders to handle fire in the buildings that are beyond the height of 25 meters. In emergency situation the public fire service department lends the equipment from a private developer that has its own fire service station and can deal with fire in the buildings of height 40 meters. As per an official estimate, 1200 buildings have a height of 40 meters. There are 10,000 highrises in Gurugram but only 1270 highrises have fire safety clearance. This has prompted the officials to issue notices to various structures including 12 schools. High rises in the the city have been categorised as buildings that are over 15 meters in height. Over the years, a large number of commercial structures and residential societies that house lakhs of residents have come up in the city. Taking note of ignoring the safety of the citizens, the fire department officials have even warned the builders of action if the builders ignore the safety norms. Most of the builders have to renew the fire safety license after every one year. There is also no public health care facility offering burn wards in the city. Most of the cases of burn injuries in Gurugram government hospital are referred to public hospitals in Delhi. It is not that major fire tragedies have not occurred in Gurugram. Just this year, there have been six major fire tragedies in the industrial units where lives of not only Indian nationals but also foreign nationals have been lost. The dangers at which most of the industrial units function in Gurugram was experienced when a plastic factory in Manesar caught fire (pic). As it was a Sunday, there were no casualties but heavy losses were caused due to the fire.
