New Delhi: "Delhi Transco Limited has developed disaster resilient infrastructure and has retrofitted existing infrastructure for resilience during the last few years and we are moving towards smart grids," said Padmini Singla – CMD of Delhi Transco Limited. She was speaking at global symposium organised by Special Centre for Disaster Research at JNU. Recalling the incidents of 2014 when Delhi and its adjoining areas were badly hit by high storm due to which eight towers of 220 KV were toppled down and the power supply in some part of the city was affected for one or two days. To deal with such situations, Delhi Transco Limited has procured Emergency Restoration System (ERS). ERS is a temporary tower which is erected pending permanent repair of the damaged tower. The total installed generation capacity of India is 363 GW which is synchronized on one single frequency. Managing such a big capacity electricity network is itself risk, because in case of eventuality entire grid blackout may happen which we have seen for two consecutive days in July 2012 when 22 states plunged in darkness. "With the learning of this incident, Delhi Transco Limited has implemented an islanding scheme in its transmission system. In case of any major grid disturbance, it will enable the power supply of Delhi to survive by forming an island of around 2500 MW," she added.
