New Delhi: Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on Thursday said that after series of discussion with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration and Students Union (JNUSU), the students have decided to end the strike. However, JNUSU has claimed that there were no concrete results from the meetings and have asked for another round. The MHRD in a circular stated that the hostel fee has been revised from Rs 10 per month to Rs 300 per month (double-room), and Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month (single room), while students belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) category will get 50 per cent concession. "The UGC will bear the cost of service and utility charges proposed till further orders," said MHRD. "The above proposal of change in the fee structure shall be ratified by convening IHA meeting as per the university statues," said the statement from the Ministry. However, JNUSU vice-president has said that the decision has not been finalised yet. "This is not final, we have reservations regarding this. We have asked the Ministry for another round of discussions," he said. MHRD has also claimed that it has been decided to compensate for the lost academic period, the Academic Council will be requested to consider and give the students "relaxation up to two weeks." The students have also been ordered to end their strike. "In accordance with the above, each of the parties, namely the JNU administration and the JNUSU will take immediate steps for restoration of the normal functioning of the university," said a statement from the ministry. Meanwhile, after Delhis High Court order, the JNU admin on Thursday held a closed meeting with the hostel presidents, which was also attended by Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. Speaking to Millennium Post, admin members said the meeting was fruitful, where both parties heard each other. "We heard the students and the students heard us. We are open for dialogue with the students union as well," said one of the rectors, who was present in the meeting. However, hostel presidents said no discussion over the fee hike issue was discussed, while the V-C just thanked the students and left immediately. "This meeting was only for show, just because the High Court has asked them to have a dialogue. They want to show that they have started having meetings," said a hostel president standing outside the admin building. Meanwhile, after the courts order, the admin building was emptied while the VC has said that the work will resume as the building is now "free". The students, however, have said they are not going to vacate the building. On the other hand, the students boycotted the exams and sat outside their respective schools in protest.
