The Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Vice University, Najma Akhtar on Tuesday met Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Secretary Amit Khare and sought an inquiry into the police action in the university library on December 15 last year. Akhtar also briefed Khare about the students protest outside her office on Monday when students entered the varsity campus and demanded an FIR against 'police brutality' in the library. On Monday, the V-C had announced that exam dates will be rescheduled and assured students that security in the campus has been increased. The protesters while retreating took Maulana Mohd Ali Jauhar Marg which passes through the university campus, the varsity said. Clashes had erupted between the Delhi Police and Jamia students last month after a protest outside the university campus against the newly-amended Citizenship law turned violent.

On Monday, the V-C had announced that exam dates will be rescheduled and assured students that security in the campus has been increased. It may be noted that JMI had earlier submitted a report to the MHRD seeking a probe by a high-powered committee or judicial inquiry into the matter. The varsity had demanded a probe into three matters: unauthorised entry of Delhi Police inside the campus, use of force and infliction of brutal and grievous physical injuries on the students who were peacefully studying inside the reading rooms of the library, vandalising and damaging the properties of the library/university and also damaging the two-wheelers parked in the vicinity of the library. The university said that that the police used teargas and lathicharge to disperse protesters gathered on the Mathura Road and Julena Road on December 15-16. The protesters while retreating took Maulana Mohd Ali Jauhar Marg which passes through the university campus, the varsity said. Clashes had erupted between the Delhi Police and Jamia students last month after a protest outside the university campus against the newly-amended Citizenship law turned violent. (With ANI inputs)
