CWCs use video conferencing to reach out to children in CCIs

NEW DELHI: Technology is proving to be handy for child welfare committees (CWCs) across Delhi in reaching out to the children living in child care institutions (CCIs) in the Capital. Through video conferencing and emails, the status of children is being regularly monitored. Child Welfare Committee-III in Sewa Kutir Complex in Kingsway camp looks after 400 children living in eight CCIs in the city. As a follow-up measure, chairperson and members of CWC are interacting with the children staying in all eight homes through video conferencing on a daily basis, ensuring their well-being and also providing necessary counselling where required. They are also viewing the CCIs and open shelters through video conferencing to ensure and monitor hygiene and other activities of the homes.

NEW DELHI: Technology is proving to be handy for child welfare committees (CWCs) across Delhi in reaching out to the children living in child care institutions (CCIs) in the Capital. Through video conferencing and emails, the status of children is being regularly monitored. On the other hand, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) visited two CCIs on Sunday and found out that the children living there were aware of precautions to be taken to protect themselves and those around them from the COVID-19. Child Welfare Committee-III in Sewa Kutir Complex in Kingsway camp looks after 400 children living in eight CCIs in the city. As a follow-up measure, chairperson and members of CWC are interacting with the children staying in all eight homes through video conferencing on a daily basis, ensuring their well-being and also providing necessary counselling where required. During the interaction, the queries of the children were mostly related to their education and whereabouts of their parents. "On an average, follow up interactions on a one-to-one basis with 50 children per day is being done. They are also viewing the CCIs and open shelters through video conferencing to ensure and monitor hygiene and other activities of the homes. Suggestions are given on daily routine activities of the children. Care-giving staff has also been advised to engage children in various activities during this period of lockdown," KC Virmani, chairperson, CWC-III said, adding that specific and necessary directions regarding production and follow up of the cases through video, teleconferencing were also given to all concerned stakeholders, including the police. Meanwhile, three homes in Mori Gate, Tis Hazari and Kashmere Gate have been transformed into a facility to house children suspected of having been infected by the Coronavirus. Meenu Mehta, chairperson of CWC in Nirmal Chhaya complex said that their welfare officers are regularly keeping a tab on the children living there. "There is also a home for pregnant minors at the complex and we are taking extra care of them. Our welfare officers send the overall report of these children through email," she said. Jyoti Duhan Rathee, member DCPCR on Sunday visited two CCIs in Azadpur, Jahangirpuri and found that proper hygiene was maintained and children were educated. "There was garbage near one of the CCIs which was later cleaned," she said. Jyoti further said that children kept asking when Coronavirus will go but that they were also well aware of precautions to be taken during COVID-19. "In small groups, I interacted with them. They informed me about what are precautions like social distancing and they are not going out," she said. The caretakers in both CCIs are not allowing any outsiders to enter their premises.
