New Delhi: Even though the state machineries have been put in place to provide all sorts of relief for the migrant labourers and lower income people in Delhi, there seems to be a gap due to which a lot of families and people have not received any help. As the hue and cry among the migrant labourers is increasing, civil societies and individual groups seem to come at the forefront for help. However, they have expressed their frustration over the inadequate help and resources from the government. Tanvi, a lawyer and spokesperson for Volunteers Collective, said: "We have been receiving distress calls since the lockdown and have been trying to provide food and ration to people in distress, however, we are getting little help from the state machinery. They are swamped but there is no articulate system to deal with such a crisis." Meanwhile, many people who work as daily wage labourers are stuck in their rented rooms and are anxious about their future. "Our ration got over and we have been trying to call the helpline numbers but none of them are functional," he told. Santosh along with 20 other people is stuck at Mundka area. As he was not able to reach the government, civil groups came to the rescue. Tanvi said that her team has been constantly trying to provide relief. "It has become a chaotic situation," she added. On the other hand, a source working with the Delhi government said that there are few people on ground, who are personally tacking intense cases. "We are working with whatever limited resources we have," they said. Besides the organisations, many individual have been trying to reach out and help. Kavita, a resident of Janakpuri has been sending food material to different part of Delhi. But as it is difficult to move without a pass, she has been coordinating with civil groups. "I am trying to help after I heard about the distress the marginalised community is facing. This is the least we can do," she said. Civil organisations have been crowdfunding and distributing ration. "Although the government is sending cooked food, we have to understand the lockdown is a long process and we need to help them in the long haul. Now that they wont be able to go back home, it is necessary to help those in need," said a group of activists who have been distributing food. As COVID-19 threat continues, the number of cases in India increased to 1,071 cases on Monday. Out of these, 942 are active cases, according to the health ministry.
