As the Centre announced a ministerial probe into the workings of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit back at the government in a strong statement, saying that those who speak the truth cannot be intimidated. On Wednesday, the government set up an inter-ministerial team to coordinate a probe into the alleged violation of various laws like money laundering and foreign contributions by three Nehru-Gandhi family linked trusts, including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF). New Delhi: As the Centre announced a ministerial probe into the workings of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit back at the government in a strong statement, saying that those who speak the truth cannot be intimidated. On Wednesday, the government set up an inter-ministerial team to coordinate a probe into the alleged violation of various laws like money laundering and foreign contributions by three Nehru-Gandhi family linked trusts, including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF). Now, Rahul Gandhi has commented on the development.

In a strongly-worded tweet, Rahul Gandhi has accused the Modi government of trying to intimidate `those who fight for the truth`. Making a direct attack on PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi wrote, "Mr Modi believes the world is like him. He thinks everyone has a price or can be intimidated. He will never understand that those who fight for the truth have no price and cannot be intimidated."

Though the former Congress chief did not mention any inquiry, his remarks came after the government set up an inter-ministerial team to coordinate a probe into the alleged violation of various laws including the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) by three trusts associated with the Nehru-Gandhi family -- the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was dragged into controversy amidst India-China tensions as the BJP alleged that the RGF had received funds from the Chinese Embassy previously. A Home Ministry spokesperson said a special director in the Enforcement Directorate will head the inter-ministerial team. The PMLA deals with cases related to money laundering and the FCRA deals with acceptance and utilisation of foreign contributions.

CONGRESS SAYS NOTHING TO FEAR

The Congress on Wednesday accused the government of carrying out a “blind witch hunt” against the opposition party and applying "double standards" in instituting a probe into the funding of its trusts including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, saying such questions are not asked of some "holy cows" close to the government. Daring the government to deploy its machinery in investigating the financial sources of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the trusts have nothing to fear and will answer every question like law-abiding persons.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the Congress and its leadership will “not be intimidated by the cowardly acts and blind witch-hunt by a panicked Modi government". “The wild and insidious hatred of the BJP of Congress leadership unfolds every day in an embarrassing and uglier fashion,” he said in a statement.
