New Delhi: A day before the bhoomi pujan ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, BJP leader Vijay Goel decided to unilaterally change the name of Delhi`s Babar Road to 5 August Road. On Tuesday, Vijay Goel, along with a group of supporters, headed to Babar Road in central Delhi`s high-security zone and pasted a poster reading 5 August Marg on a sign for Babar Road.

Goel has demanded that Babar Road, named after the Mughal ruler, should be renamed either to 5 August Marg or be named after an eminent personality. He has also written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take action in the matter. Taking to Twitter, Vijay Goel wrote, "Babur Road in Delhi`s Bengali Market should be renamed as "August 5 Marg". Babur was a foreign aggressor, he was responsible for the demolition of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. On August 5, the prime minister will lay the foundation stone of the grand temple of Shri Ram in Ayodhya, which is why the NDMC should change the name of Babar Road."

"Babur was a tyrant. Whenever the Ram Mandir is brought up in a discussion, he is always described as a persecutor. Hence we should change the name of the road," Vijay Goel said. While the Babar Road signage is only 50 yards away from Vijay Goel`s residence in Delhi, it took the BJP leader 28 years to suggest a name change.

According to Goel, since a grand Ram temple is now being built in Ayodhya, it is now the right time to put forth a demand to rename Delhi`s Babar Road. The BJP leader that `5 August Marg` is just a suggestion and if the Home Ministry or the NDMC wants it can also rename the road as per their wish. The Supreme Court had in November last year paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple by a Trust at the disputed site of the Babri Masjid`s demolition in Ayodhya and directed the Centre to allot an alternative 5-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a "prominent" place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh.

On August 5, Prime Minister Modi will head to Ayodhya to attend the bhoomi pujan for the Ram temple.
