Delhi court rebukes govt, grants bail to activist Disha Ravi in toolkit case

  • | Tuesday | 23rd February, 2021

In recent events in toolkit case, a Delhi court granted bail to 22-year-old environmental activist Disha Ravi.  She was arrested from her residence in Bengaluru by Delhi Police earlier this month in connection with the `toolkit` case.

The order was passed on Tuesday by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana. While granting Disha Ravi bail, the court asked her to furnish a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and two additional sureties.

"Considering the scanty and sketchy evidence available on record, I do not find any palpable reasons to breach the general rule of `Bail` against a 22 years old young lady, with absolutely blemish-free criminal antecedents and having firm roots in the society, and send her to jail," Judge Dharmender Rana said in his order.

Disha Ravi was seen sitting with her lawyers in the courtroom after the order on her bail was read out.

Disha Ravi`s lawyer told the court that her family cannot afford to furnish a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh since it is a high amount. As she was brought to the courtroom, Disha Ravi broke down while hugging her relatives, as per eyewitness accounts.

Reacting to the court order granting Disha Ravi bail, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said in a tweet, “We live in strange times when, We rejoice bail for Disha who should not have been in jail in the first place; We rejoice Priya Ramani’s verdict when the ordeal of harassment& intimidation was hers to bear&intent was to get justice not to be served a defamation. Women, fight on!

The Delhi Police on Tuesday filed a petition in the Patiala House court seeking an extension of Disha Ravi`s police custody by another four days. A Delhi court had on February 22 extended Disha Ravi`s custody by 24 hours.
