NEW DELHI: Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawala on Monday said it is not possible to ramp up vaccine production overnight. Amid the ferocious second wave gripping India, Poonawala said "vaccine manufacturing is a specialised process. It is therefore, not possible to ramp up production overnight. "

Amid the ferocious second wave gripping India, Poonawala said "vaccine manufacturing is a specialised process. It is therefore, not possible to ramp up production overnight. "

Poonawala further said producing enough doses for all adults in India is not an easy task. He also said Serum has received "all kinds of support, be it scientific, regulatory and financial" from the goverment.

After Centre issued clarification on media reports saying it has not placed any orders for vaccine, Poonawala said Serum has "got 100% advance of Rs. 1732 50 Crore by Gol for the next tranche of 11 crore doses in the next few months." "As of today, we received total orders of over 26 crore doses, of which we supplied more than 15 crore doses," he said. "Another 11 crore doses would be supplied in the second channel for states & private hospitals in the next few months," he said. He said it is Serum`s endeavor to make vaccine available in the "quickest possible time" and it is making every effort to achieve that.
