The FBI officially confirmed that DarkSide was responsible for compromising Colonial Pipeline`s networks on Monday, saying that it was continuing to work with the firm and other government agencies on the investigation.
The Biden administration has declared a state of emergency following a cyber attack on America`s largest oil pipeline. The Colonial Pipeline Company, which has been attacked, supplies 2.5 million barrels of oil daily. Petrol, diesel and other gases are supplied via pipeline to states located along the east coast of the US.
The cyber security of this pipeline was attacked by hackers on Friday, which is yet to be recovered. Therefore, oil and gas is being supplied to New York through recovery tankers. The impact of the cyberattack will be highest on Atlanta and Tennessee. After some time, the effect can be seen even up to New York, the company`s 4 main lines had come to a standstill by Sunday night.
Experts say that this may increase oil prices by 2 to 3 per cent. If it takes longer then the situation can get worse. According to Gaurav Sharma, an independent oil market analyst, a large amount of oil is trapped in the Taxes refineries. He said that if the situation is not normal by Tuesday, a big crisis could arise. It is believed that this incident will also have an impact on India and along with the price of petrol and diesel, there may be a jump in the price of gas.
The cyberattack has been carried out by a gang of cybercriminals named Darkside. They hacked the Colonial Company`s network and stole around 100GB of data. Hackers have also demanded ransom by locking some computers. Darkside has threatened to leak the data on the internet if the ransom is not received.
