Executive Director the Centre for Holistic Development (CHD), an NGO working for the homeless, Sunil Kumar Aledia on Sunday wrote a letter to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the issue of houseless persons in the Capital. In his letter, he said, I am writing to bring to your attention the pressing issue of houseless persons in our city. The number of individuals and families living on the streets, under flyovers, and on sidewalks has been steadily increasing, leading to significant concerns for both their safety and the overall well-being of our city. He also raised the issue of a 45-year-old homeless man being killed after being allegedly hit by a speeding car and dragged by it for around 10 metres in Delhis busy Connaught Place, resulting in his death, on Saturday. And a similar incident took place in August, when three homeless persons died after a truck allegedly ran over five people sleeping on a footpath in the Shastri Park area of northeast Delhi. An officer said the victims were homeless and sleeping on the footpath. These events underscore the increasing vulnerability and neglect faced by Delhis homeless population, highlighting urgent needs for better safety measures and support, Aledia said.
