Undertrial murdered inside Saket court lock-up, Delhi Police suspect old rivalry

  • | Friday | 6th June, 2025

A 24-year-old undertrial prisoner was allegedly murdered by two fellow inmates inside the Saket court lock-up on Thursday. The incident took place when the deceased, identified as Aman, a resident of Govindpuri, had been brought to the court for a scheduled hearing in an attempted murder case against him. Police said the three knew each other.  The accused first banged the head of Aman, 24, on the wall of the cell and then pinned him down and strangled him with their feet. According to Delhi Police, Aman was placed in lock-up Kharja number five before being presented before the judge. It was there that he was allegedly attacked by two other undertrial inmates — Jitender alias Jitte and Jaidev alias Baccha — both of whom were also housed in Tihar Jails Jail number eight, the same facility where Aman was lodged. Officials stated that the accused inmates smashed Amans head against the wall and repeatedly kicked him in a brutal assault. There were multiple undertrial prisoners in the same lock-up at the time of the incident, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan. Aman was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Highlighting the glaring lapses in the judicial security framework, Advocate Virender Kasana, former Secretary of the Patiala House Court Bar Association, termed it a major security lapse on the part of the Delhi Police. Putting three people who knew each other and had a prior feud in the same cell is inexcusable, Kasana said. All police officials are aware of the backgrounds of the prisoners they are escorting. This was a serious error in judgment and procedure. Preliminary inquiries have pointed towards an old rivalry as a likely motive behind the assault. According to police sources, Aman had allegedly stabbed Jitender and his brother during a confrontation in 2024. The animosity between them reportedly escalated during their time in judicial custody, ultimately culminating in Thursdays fatal assault. A police team has been constituted to probe the sequence of events and senior officers have been briefed on the case. In response to the incident, Anil Basoya, Secretary of the Saket Bar Association, stated that such an episode was unprecedented within the Saket court premises. No weapon was used in the assault, but the brutality of the act is deeply disturbing, Basoya said, adding that the association was closely monitoring the developments. The police have registered a case of murder and sent Amans body for post-mortem. Apart from investigating the motive, officials are also looking into the delayed response of security personnel posted inside the lock-up at the time. The role of custodial staff and the possibility of negligence in inmate handling are also under scrutiny, police said.
