A three-storey under-construction commercial building collapsed in Delhis Rohini Sector 7 on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a major rescue operation after construction workers were feared trapped under the debris, said officials. The structure, which previously housed a departmental store, had recently been sold and was reportedly under construction at the time of the collapse, said a nearby resident. The incident occurred around 4 pm, following which the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received a distress call at 4:04 pm. Within minutes, four fire tenders along with five rescue teams were rushed to the spot, said Delhi Fire Service (DFS) Chief Atul Garg. Fire officials confirmed that at least two people were initially feared trapped, though eyewitness accounts suggested that four to five labourers had been buried beneath the rubble. Those pulled out were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. An officer from the fire department said that the teams began operations promptly, and additional support was called in as the scale of the collapse became evident. The Delhi Police Control Room also intervened by requesting a JCB (excavator) to assist in removing large sections of debris. Simultaneously, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was alerted and joined the rescue efforts shortly after. Eyewitnesses reported a sudden crashing sound, followed by panic as dust filled the air. One of them mentioned that the building had been under construction for a few days and that labourers were working inside when it gave way. While the exact cause of the collapse remained under investigation, preliminary suspicion pointed toward structural weaknesses or unsafe renovation work.
