A 19-year-old woman in is battling for her life after she allegedly consumed acid in a suicide attempt after the man she had been in a relationship with for seven years refused to marry her despite repeated assurances. The accused, identified as Rehan, has been arrested, police said. Police said they received information from a hospital on June 18 regarding a suicide attempt by a young woman. When the investigating officer reached the hospital, he collected the medical documents which stated that the woman was unfit to give a statement. During investigation, police also recovered an acid bottle from the scene of the incident. The woman is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital, and her condition is stated to be critical. Rehan, who is in his late 20s, reportedly faked his identity before the woman and entered into a relationship with her. He is also accused of developing physical relations with her under the false promise of marriage. According to police, the accused allegedly forced the woman to undergo abortions on two separate occasions. The womans father, in his complaint to the Vasant Kunj South police, alleged that Rehan introduced himself under a fake identity when he met his daughter seven years ago. As their relationship progressed, Rehan promised to marry her. The father stated that he was aware of their relationship and had agreed to the marriage, but had asked Rehan to wait until the girl turned 18. This year, when my daughter turned 19, I approached Rehan to discuss the marriage. But he refused. He had been blackmailing my daughter and threatening to leak her videos. He made her undergo abortions twice. He exploited her for years, the father said in his complaint. He further said, On June 18, no one was at home when my daughter consumed acid. I need justice.  The complainant also handed over the victims mobile phone to the police, which contains voice messages of the accused supporting the allegations, police said. Based on the fathers complaint and other evidence, police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other applicable Bhartiya Nyay Samhita (BNS) sections. Rehan, who was earlier employed as a loader at the airport and is currently unemployed, has been arrested. His father is a labourer, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Amit Goyal, confirmed the arrest of the accused, stating that further investigation is ongoing in the case.
