The Shortsightedness

We obsessively read about yesterday while remaining largely blind to what is coming. Consider an anecdote from Bihar: after months without progress on a complex legal brief, a young professional reportedly used retrieval-augmented generation and agentic AI tools to sift the case files and mapped out a strategy in two days ; prompting the senior advocate involved to consider sending his own son to learn the same tools. That said, adoption must be balanced against foundational cognition. Cognitive research does support the idea that the struggle of writing by hand or drafting from scratch builds working memory and executive function — faculties worth protecting even as we adopt new tools.

This disruption will not spare blue-collar work either — drivers, security guards and cleaners face real change ahead, even as domestic conglomerates like Reliance pour resources into AI.

What Should Students Do?

Stripping away confirmation bias, the answer for today`s students is not either/or.

While studying, the priority is building genuine critical thinking rather than outsourcing cognition to a chatbot. But that`s only half the task. On entering the workforce, students must adopt AI tools aggressively, because obsolete skill sets will not survive contact with the market.

Build the mind first, master the machine second. The future belongs to those who can do both.
