Hailing the Delhi High Court order granting police protection to a 19-year-old transgender, LGBT activists Friday said there was a need to check “domestic violence” faced by trans and LGBT persons. Activists also said the UP police had threatened and harassed them while searching for Shivy, as his parents had filed a false kidnapping complaint. John added that every citizen of the country was entitled to “basic rights under Articles 14,16,19 & 21” of the Constitution. Advocate Rebecca John also pointed out that Shivy, who was born a female but identifies as a male, was “not asking for any special rights”. Speaking at a press conference called to discuss the case filed by the transgender, Shivy, against his parents and the Uttar Pradesh police, activist Leslie Esteves said this was an example of “the kind of violence parents put their children through”.
