more-in A 28-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of four to five men who accused him of stealing from a haystack godown in north-west Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar on Sunday night. The body of the victim, Shankar (28), was found with multiple injury marks in an open field near Vijay Chowk. No case has been registered so far, but the police have detained three persons for questioning. Probe suggests that the suspects dumped the body around a half-a-kilometre away from the spot to mislead THE investigators. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Milind Dumbre said the incident came to light around 7.15 am on Monday after a passerby discovered the body in the field and called the police control room. On preliminary inquiry the body was identified as that of Shankar, a resident of Jahangirpuri. “His house was traced to C-1733 Jahangirpuri and his family was contacted. The deceased was jobless and unmarried,” said Mr. Dumbre. Thrashed mercilessly On what made the police suspect Shankar was lynched, Mr. Dumbre said the nature of the injuries suggested that he was thrashed mercilessly. Also a security guard in the area, who had allegedly witnessed the assault, told the police that a group of four to five men beat up Shankar on the suspicion that he stole iron plates and other items from a haystack godown. The guard said he did not inform the police about the incident as he was scared. Shankar’s body was taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) hospital where medical examination revealed serious injuries on his body and face that resulted in his death. “During the investigation it was found that the man was beaten up by the mob. Later, the accused took him 400 metres away to an open field and dumped his body there,” said another police officer. “The persons who have been detained claim that Shankar was stealing from the godown and that’s why they beat him up,” Mr. Dumbre added. ‘Victim was depressed’ The police said that his family members have said that he was jobless and depressed for the past few days. His sister Manju, who identified Shankar’s body, said she had gone to the spot out of curiosity and had no clue that the deceased was her brother.
