more-in After the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) sent the three minor girls rescued by the Delhi Commission for Women on Wednesday back to their parents, the DCW said on Friday that it had written to the East District Magistrate demanding a review of the decision. The commission had on Wednesday rescued two minor girls found begging near Anand Vihar metro station. When the DCW approached the family, it found an eight-year-old chained to a tree. Family of 11 “It is a family of 11, including nine children, living on the pavement close to the metro station. The commission found the father heavily drunk. Further, the parents had tied their eight-year-old to a tree claiming she was a drug addict. The family was counselled and the girls were housed in a shelter home for the night,” said the commission. However, the CWC sent the girls back to their parents. Objecting to the move, the commission said, “The DCW had specifically requested the CWC to ensure that all the girls be kept together in a proper hostel where they can study. Further, it was also suggested that the eight-year-old be counselled and sent to a de-addiction centre. However, the CWC immediately handed over the girls to the parents.” Demanding proper rehabilitation of the minors, the letter to the District Magistrate read, “Considering the gravity of the matter, you are requested to....urgently arrange for proper rehabilitation and protection of the girls.” DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “It is highly disappointing. The CWC immediately handed over the girls to their parents without enquiry. The DCW team is stationed at the metro station to assist the girls. We will leave no stone unturned.” G. B. Road raid In another development, Ms. Maliwal alleged that the Delhi Police sent 14 of 17 girls rescued from G. B. Road on Friday back to the brothels. “Despite written orders from the CWC, the girls were sent back to the brothels. The fact that CWC orders were flouted shows how the Delhi Police are also involved in the business at G. B. Road. We are going to take the matter to the highest authorities, including the Commissioner of Police, and demand strict action against the officers involved.” “Why can’t the authorities take steps to stop brothels at G. B. Road, which is located within three km of Parliament? Girls are tortured there repeatedly. It is important that we stop this.”
