FARIDABAD: In a major setback to digital India , nine people were booked on Wednesday on charges of corruption and embezzlement of excise department in Faridabad. The discrepancies were observed in the online record keeping , following which a police FIR has been filed in Faridabad. The squad uncovered that government officials were running nexus with L1 and L13 licence contractors. This led to revenue losses to the government.A few days ago, the chief minister flying squad ( CMFS ) received information about ongoing corruption in Faridabad’s excise department. Following this, a confidential investigation was conducted in the matter. The investigations were conducted by assistant commissioner of police (CMFS) Dinesh Yadav who noticed that a nexus between liquor contractors and the government officials. The investigations revealed that four excise inspectors and two assistant excise and taxation officers (ATEO) were benefiting three contractors who had L1 and L13 licences. As per the rules, a permit duty is paid for English wine which falls under L1 licence, and an excise duty is paid to the government for country-made liquor that is served under L13 licence. These officials would collect a smaller amount from the contractors and will deposit the same amount in the government treasury. However, in the online records, they would show an entry with an extra zero behind the figures. Therefore, it reflected as if the contractor had paid 10 times the amount than he had actually paid. The primary investigations by CMFS revealed that a loss of Rs 4.50 crore has already been suffered by the government. The investigations were completed in 15 days, and a report was sent to the chief minister’s office for consideration.A sanction to take a police action arrived on Wednesday. Following this, four excise inspectors namely Radheyshyam, Praveen Punjani, Vishambhar and Vijay Kumar, three contractors including Raghuvir Singh, Virender Singh and Neeraj Sachdeva, and two assistant excise and taxation officers (ATEO) Anil Beniwal and Rakesh Sharma were booked. They have been booked under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 471 (using as genuine a forged) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) IPC at sector 12 police station in Faridabad.“The primary investigations revealed that these people would collect and deposit around only 10 percent of the amount but would provide benefits worth ten times the amount. In every transaction there is an extra zero behind than what was actually paid. Now, we will conduct a detailed investigation to check if more people are involved, since when this has been going on and how much losses have been suffered,” said ACP Yadav.Ironically, the government had launched the e-portals and online payment methods to curb corruption and bring transparency in the system. However, the officials misused the system to feed the wrong information, thus causing losses to the government.
