A few of the persons booked have been involved in facilitating selection and purchase of arms, deciding the rates of such arms and suggesting routes by which the arms can be smuggled.” We shall approach the apex court again on the next hearing and try to convince it about the need to arrest the activists,” Bodkhe said. The five activists were arrested last month in connection with the funding of the Elgar Parishad, held a day before the January 1 Koregaon Bhima violence. PUNE: Joint commissioner of police Shivaji Bodkhe on Thursday said the city police would wait and watch for further developments after the Supreme Court extended the house arrest of five activists — writer-activist P Varavara Rao (Hyderabad), lawyer Vernon Gonsalves (Mumbai), human rights activist-lawyer Arun Ferreira (Thane), activist-lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj (Faridabad) and human rights activist Gautam Navlakha (Delhi) — till September 12.“We are left with no choice now. We have followed all the procedures of the arrest and have filmed the entire process when the police went to arrest them.”He said, “The evidence clearly reflects the preparation, planning and coordination not only among the persons booked but also with the others (subsequently arrested) to incite violence, plan ambush and rebellion against the ‘enemy’ — the country and its security forces.

The police claimed that they had strong evidence explaining how the Communist Party of India (Maoist), a banned outfit, raised funds for the Parishad held on December 31, 2017, on the premises of Shaniwarwada. The police said the house arrest of the five activists would hamper the probe because they cannot be questioned.A senior officer told TOI, “We have arrested only those persons, whose names surfaced during investigations.
