CHANDIGARH: Farmers of the state owe Rs 1,406.14 crore to Haryana Land Mortgage Bank and Rs 6,301. 31 crore to central cooperative banks of the districts. Haryana's cooperative minister Munish Kumar Grover said this in response to an unstarred question raised by INLD MLA from Julana Parminder Dhull.Dhull had asked the question in the wake of increasing action by banks against farmers who have failed to repay the loans.According to information tabled in the assembly on Monday, maximum outstanding areas of land mortgage bank are in Faridabad district, where 16,391 farmers owe Rs 214.39 crore. Similarly, with an outstanding amount of Rs 484.11 crore, Bhiwani tops the list of outstanding amounts of districts central cooperative banks.Dhull said that the basic purpose of asking the question was to have first-hand information about farmer debts."The Haryana government can just place the details on record, or else we will raise the issue of farmer debts before the government. On one hand the government gives free movement to those who have defaulted in paying the huge amounts of outstanding debts and have virtually made the banks go dry. On the other hand, small farmers are harassed in the name of recovery. They are threatened arrests as well," said Dhull."All this is happening at a time when the state government is not able to do justice with farmers by giving good rates for crops," he said.
