Faridabad: The 16-year-old boy from Faridabad who lost his adoptive parents recently has now been placed under the care of the state government. Earlier, TOI had reported that the blind and mute child had lost his father to Covid, and his mother had committed suicide. Naman (name changed) is now at a childcare institute in Gurugram. On Sunday, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar visited him and said the state government will bear the expenses for his upbringing and care.

He also said the state government will provide financial aid to the 16-year-old boy under Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana. “The government has taken a measure to help such children so that they are taken care of,” he said, adding that the government will help more such institutions.

Khattar was on his way to Delhi when he visited the Gurugram institute. Sunil Kohli, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson in Gurugram, said the boy responds to a few words. “He will be taken to Delhi-based Institute Of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences for further check-up and we will ensure that the child gets proper treatment,” he said.Naman had been adopted by a childless couple in their 50s and he used to stay with them in Faridabad.

On May 7, his 69-year-old father tested positive for Covid and he passed away within a week on May 14. Later, the child’s mother died by suicide on May 22.

The boy was admitted to a hospital for two days after he had fallen ill. From there, he was first taken to a shelter home in Faridabad and then brought to Deepashram in Gurugram. The CWC had given an online approval for the process. Deepashram has children and adults with special needs and the inmates are between 10 and 35 years of age. The institute is run by the Society of the Missionary Brothers of Charity Contemplative, a branch of the Missionaries of Charity.

According to Kohli, Naman’s case was the first in the city where a child had lost both the parents due to Covid. “We have requested people to inform us if they come across more such cases so that we can reach out to the children. People can call the child helpline number or contact the CWC’s Gurugram office directly,” he had said earlier. Upasna Sachdeva, a CWC member in Gurugram, said there were cases of children who had lost a parent or both of them to Covid, but their relatives had decided to take care of them.
