GHAZIABAD: A local court in Ghaziabad sent Shivam Birdi, the alleged killer of 26-year-old beautician Jyoti Verma, to 14 days’ judicial custody on Thursday following his arrest. Shivam (22), is alleged to have stabbed Jyoti to death in his rented flat in Khoda Colony and then tried to dispose of the body using a cab hired from a self drive rental service after stuffing it inside a trolley bag.He fled from Khoda when he was apprehended by locals while trying to transport the body in the cab around midnight on June 12. An autopsy has revealed that Jyoti was killed more than 72 hours before police found her body.Police said Shivam and Jyoti was living together in the flat for the past eight months. Shivam had a BCA degree from the Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology in Ludhiana and worked as a happy caller with Vivo phone company in Noida.“Jyoti was stabbed using a kitchen knife on the lower left portion of her rib on the night of June 9. The couple were in a live-in relationship but Shivam was miffed with Jyoti because she used to return late from work. He suspected Jyoti of having affairs with other men. Though Shivam always insisted on checking Jyoti’s cell phone, she never allowed it. He killed Jyoti during a quarrel and was trying to take the body to Punjab for disposal when he was caught,” said SSP Vaibhav Krishna.According to police, Shivam had decided to dispose the body after it began emitting stench.At the police lines, where Shivam was brought before being taken to court, Shivam told this reporter that he had spent around 72 hours inside the flat with Jyoti’s body after killing her.“At 11 pm on June 9, there was a quarrel when Jyoti returned late from work. I was inebriated and stabbed her during the quarrel. She died a few minutes later. I wiped away bloodstains from the floor with water and stuffed her body immediately inside a trolley bag. I sat the entire night pondering over my next course of action. Next morning, I went downstairs and fetched alcohol which I consumed inside my room next to the body inside the trolley bag. But I did not eat anything during those 72 hours,” Shivam told TOI.Shivam and Jyoti had met each other outside a saloon in Ludhiana, where the latter used to work around two years ago. They soon started a relationship which was oblivious to Jyoti’s family. Jyoti, who had dropped out of studies after Class XII, came to live with Shivam in Ghaziabad in October last year. Shivam had already shifted to the rented accommodation in August after finding a job.“I had asked Jyoti to marry me on several times. But she kept on turning down the proposal on one pretext or the other. We always used to fight over this. I had heard about the hire and drive taxi service earlier. I decided to take the body to Punjab, dispose it somewhere and return home. However, I was caught due to the stench,” said Shivam.
