Let shop area at IHC open, seal other parts: Businessmen

GHAZIABAD: Even as the Allahabad high court is expected to hear the Indirapuram Habitat Centre sealing case on Thursday, the shopkeepers have suggested a way out.Over a 100 shopkeepers affected by the move have urged Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to lift sealing in phase 1 where shops are located and instead seal IHC’s phases 2 and 3, where construction activity is being carried out, to exert pressure on the builder to deposit property tax dues. GDA has not yet taken a call on this matter.The district administration, on July 4, sealed IHC, one of the largest retail hubs in Ghaziabad, over non-payment of property tax dues to GDA.“We are being penalized for no fault of ours, our business has come to a halt and we are incurring huge losses,” said Anuj Mittal, who owns a shop in IHC. “We met GDA vice-chairperson Ritu Maheshwari and suggested her to seal phases 2 and 3 of IHC as it belongs to the builder,” he added.Though the GDA did not give any assurance to the delegation of shopkeepers, but officials promised to look into the suggestion. “There is no written assurance from GDA as yet, but we would definitely give it a serious thought,” Santosh Rai, secretary, GDA, told TOI on Wednesday.Meanwhile, GDA has decided to attach bank accounts of property tax defaulters in the city. There are 17 such defaulters. Since they all have been served RC and they have not responded to it, we’ll move to attach their bank accounts to recover our dues,” said Maheshwari.
