Satellite to map level of encroachment

This will help us find the level of encroachment,” added Saini.“This is a pilot project. One is 2D, which works on horizontal plains, the other is 3D technology, which takes into account both horizontal and vertical constructions.” As the first step, the GDA has asked RSAC to map a one sq km area in Akash Nagar, for which the agency has procured satellite images.“The GDA has given a one sq km sample area in Akash Nagar’s Krishna Kunj where we are employing remote sensing technology to map illegal constructions,” said Alok Saini, scientist at RSAC.

Once its findings are submitted, the development agency will ask RSAC to map other colonies as well,” said Ritu Maheshwari, vice-chairperson, GDA.Sources said there are over 300 illegal colonies in the city where the GDA plans to employ this technology. Saini said: “There are two methods to go about mapping an area. One is 2D, which works on horizontal plains, the other is 3D technology, which takes into account both horizontal and vertical constructions.”
