GHAZIABAD: A U-turn on the central verge of Raj Nagar Extension Road, designed to do away with the traffic signal and subsequent snarls at the entrance to the Hindon Elevated Road, will be thrown open on Tuesday. The decision was taken following directions issued by the Ghaziabad Development Authority, its vice-chairperson Ritu Maheshwari said on Saturday. The U-turn has been constructed around 200 metres down the road from the traffic signal as one drives from Raj Nagar Extension to GT Road. The curvature of the horse-shoe shaped U-turn is 18 metres and additional lanes having a width of 7.5 metres each have been constructed on either side of the road where the U-turn is located. At present, jams frequently occur at the entrance to the elevated road where vehicles coming from Raj Nagar Extension criss-cross with those coming from the side of GT Road. The U-turn will allow traffic coming from Raj Nagar Extension to merge with that coming from GT Road, causing one-way movement of vehicles at the entrance of the elevated road.“The traffic signal will be permanently done away with. The short stretch branching off from Raj Nagar Extension Road towards the traffic signal will be permanently closed. The U-turn is fully constructed now. A joint meeting with the traffic police has been scheduled to work out modalities for blocking vehicles through the traffic signal and diverting them through the U-turn. The U-turn will be fully operational from August 28,” GDA chief engineer V N Singh told TOI.The traffic signal itself had been installed in a hurry just a few days prior to the commissioning of the Hindon Elevated Road on March 30. Officials had realised that vehicles coming from Raj Nagar Extension side on to the elevated road will run directly run into those coming from GT Road. Traffic jams could not be controlled at the point despite the installation of the signal. As a result, an U-turn was conceptualized to overcome the issue.
